Below are examples of hardware we use.
USB microphone (these can be used without other recording hardware)
Blue snowball microphone($50)
example: Pediatric Ophthalmology(Down Syndrome Center of Western Pennsylvania Podcast)

Audio-Technica ATR2-100 ($80) is another popular option.
Blue Yeti Pro ($250)

Microphones
SM58 $100. This is what I use. Nice for situations where you want to try to not pick up background noise.
Rode PodMic $100. Another dynamic mic designed for podcast use.
Audio-Technica AT-2020 $100 Condenser mic - better for quiet studio setting.
SM7B $400 higher end vocal microphone.
Pop filters
Sterling Audio STPF2 $30 (lots of options. this is one I happen to have)

Recording and editing:
Audacity (Mac, PC) free
Garageband (Mac) free
Logic X (Mac) $$$
Pro Tools (Mac, PC) $$$$
Editing only:
Audiophonic - easy to use online platform to do levels, used by PHM from Pittsburgh
Recording remotely:
Zencaster free for limited amount of use, $20 monthly if you use more time
Squad cast Plans start at $10 per month and include some editing features
Zoom or other video conference with Audacity running on both sides.
